With rapid advancements in smartphones, wearables, and AR/VR technologies, the demand for short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensing is growing exponentially. Within the SWIR spectrum—spanning from 900nm to 1700nm—the 1064nm wavelength is emerging as the optimal choice for high-performance sensing applications, thanks to its unique optical advantages.

Light at different wavelengths is affected by water vapor and gases in the atmosphere, resulting in varying levels of absorption and scattering. Even in bright sunlight, haze, or high-noise environments, it consistently delivers stable signal output while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). 1064 nm wavelength significantly reduces retinal focusing and minimizes the risk of eye damage. According to IEC 60825-1:2014, the Class 1 pulsed AEL (@1 ns) for 1064nm is approximately 7 mW—nearly 9 times higher than the ~0.78 mW limit for 940nm. This enables higher-power designs while remaining eye-safe, making it ideal for safety-critical applications like children's wearables, medical monitoring devices, and in-vehicle sensing.
